Energy Matters

After staff and building costs, most companies energy bills are probably their next biggest expense. One of our on-site teams can reduce our clients energy costs by up to 25%, through a total energy management solution that will benefit both their business and the environment.

Our extensive experience in managing and controlling buildings has helped us develop a range of proven energy strategies that will allow our clients to take charge of their energy usage.

One of our teams of energy engineers can help you:

  • permanently cut energy demand and costs
  • source clean and on-site energy alternatives
  • measure and benchmark a buildings carbon footprint
  • renew asset infrastructure by developing energy-efficient solutions
  • identify and meet legislative obligations
  • educate staff in energy-awareness
  • achieve corporate social responsibility goals

Our energy engineers operate across our customers sites and business units. They are trained to optimise a building’s performance, reduce energy costs and minimise environmental impact through low cost/no cost good practice.

They will improve the existing plant efficiency, install new technology, benchmark the building’s performance, and actively review its operation against expected profiles.

Our teams can help customers meet the government’s twin targets: reducing consumption and generating more power closer to consumption. Significantly, buildings account for at least 40% of the UK’s carbon emissions.

Our teams have the experience and expertise to make use of the newest technologies, such as lighting control, variable speed drives and combined heat/power (CHP) where it’s appropriate. They are supported by a central team, offering unrivalled technical assistance, along with IT, business systems, procurement, HR, finance and quality expertise. Regular discussions with local managers ensure that the central support is tailored to the individual needs of each contract.

Norland works in partnership with our customers to design, install and maintain equipment. Our energy solutions combine:

  • Mechanical and electrical engineering best practice and energy based maintenance (energy reduction and savings)
  • utility supply and procurement (energy supply services)
  • energy management services (consultancy and ESCo)

1.    Energy reduction and savings:

  • Our energy engineers optimise mechanical and electrical performance.
  • Our project management team recommends and installs energy efficient plant.
  • We devise control strategies to improve operation of the plant and systems, through a building energy-management system.
  • We ensure compliance with the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), including energy performance certificate/display energy certificates/air-conditioning inspection.
  • We manage and monitor usage through our energy bureau, which offers a fully integrated approach to our customers’ problems.

2.    Energy supply services:

  • We ensure best value, least risk energy procurement solutions.
  • We prepare feasibility studies for alternative energy supplies.
  • We ensure Carbon Reduction Compliance (CRC) – from strategy to delivery.
  • We undertake carbon management to mitigate trading risk.

3.    Consultancy and ESCo services:

  • To ensure Carbon Reduction Compliance (CRC), we devise energy/sustainability policies and strategies.
  • We provide both internal and external energy training.
  • We can supply and run energy awareness campaigns.
  • We offer design and installation.
  • We can arrange finance of schemes for approved projects.

Carbon reduction commitments

The Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme (CRCEES) is designed to improve energy efficiency in large energy users. It does this by regulating a carbon cap and trade system, as part of the government’s target for an 80% reduction in emissions by 2050.

We have the expertise to guide customers through the complicated maze of legislation. Our services include:

  • Formulation of a CRCEES strategy for you.
  • Emission calculation and report compilation for submission to the government.
  • Purchase and trade of emissions on the primary and secondary market.
  • Installation of energy-efficient measures to reduce emissions and enhance recycled payment.
  • Installation of automatic meter reading (aMR) and sub-metering in your premises.
  • Securing the Carbon Trust Standard.

ESCo services

As an Energy Services Company (ESCo), we have the experience and capability to design, install and finance improvements to plant that will reduce utility consumption, emissions and costs.

Further potential savings can be achieved through reduced maintenance, water treatment and labour costs, which will arise from more efficient operation.

ESCo schemes can include the use of sustainable energy sources to reduce carbon emissions. Our clients benefit from a reduction in energy expenditure. They will be elevated up the performance league table and need fewer emission credits. They will obtain an increased recycling payment.

They will also be assured that their company is complying with all existing and future environmental legislation.
